Position Overview

BAAC Construction Inc. is hiring an experienced HDD Locator to support fibre optic and underground utility installations across Alberta and Western Canada.

This role is responsible for accurately locating drill heads and existing underground infrastructure in residential, commercial, rural, and high-congestion environments. The HDD Locator works closely with drill operators and field crews to ensure safe, efficient, and production-focused drilling operations.

We are looking for someone with strong communication skills, a solid understanding of underground utility construction, and the ability to perform in fast-paced field environments.

Location & Travel

• Shop based in Calgary
• Work includes both local and out-of-town projects
• Travel throughout Alberta and Western Canada may be required
• LOA and accommodations provided for eligible projects
• Overtime opportunities available depending on project schedules

What You'll Do

HDD Locating & Underground Utility Support

• Locate HDD drill heads during fibre optic and underground utility installations
• Safely guide drill operators around existing underground infrastructure
• Read and interpret:
• Locate sheets
• Drill plans
• Utility drawings
• Construction layouts
• Maintain accurate drill alignment and bore path communication
• Identify potential underground conflicts and hazards before and during drilling operations

Site Operations & Field Execution

• Support drill crews with safe and efficient project execution
• Conduct pre-job inspections, FLHAs, and hazard assessments
• Assist with job site setup, organization, and traffic/work area safety
• Work in residential, urban, rural, and high-congestion environments
• Coordinate closely with drillers, labourers, operators, supervisors, and clients

Safety & Compliance

• Follow all company safety policies and procedures
• Complete required field documentation and reporting
• Maintain strong situational awareness around underground infrastructure and active work zones
• Promote a strong safety culture and proactive hazard identification

What You Bring

Required Experience

• Minimum 2-3 years of HDD locating experience
• Experience locating fibre optic or underground utility installations
• Strong understanding of underground utility construction practices
• Experience working in congested residential and urban environments preferred

Licenses & Certifications

• Valid Class 5 driver's license with clean abstract
• Ground Disturbance Level II preferred
• Standard First Aid considered an asset

• Ability to read locate sheets and construction drawings
• Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
