Position Summary
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Project Manager specializing in long-haul fiber-optic network construction to lead complex, large-scale telecommunications infrastructure projects across Alberta and Western Canada.
This role requires a proven leader who thrives in fast-paced field environments and can successfully manage multi-discipline construction teams, tight schedules, and diverse stakeholders. The successful candidate will oversee projects from early planning through construction, testing, commissioning, and final handover -- ensuring delivery that is safe, on time, on budget, and fully compliant with provincial standards and industry best practices.
Key Competencies
- Telecommunications Infrastructure
Extensive experience managing backbone and long-haul fiber builds, rural and remote deployments, transport networks, and interconnect facilities. Strong understanding of permitting, right-of-way access, utility coordination, constructability, splicing sequencing, and field QA/QC. - Advanced Project Scheduling & Controls
Expert-level proficiency with Microsoft Project, including master schedule development, critical path analysis, resource leveling, dashboard reporting, and schedule recovery planning. Skilled in earned value and progress tracking methodologies. - End-to-End Project Delivery
Proven ability to lead projects from conceptual design through construction, testing, commissioning, and handover. Experience managing civil crews, aerial construction, trenching/boring contractors, fiber installation teams, and inspection staff. - Regulatory & Permitting Knowledge
Deep familiarity with Alberta regulatory frameworks including municipal approvals, Alberta Transportation, First Nations consultation processes, environmental requirements, land access, and utility coordination. - Vendor & Contractor Management
Strong track record of managing multiple contractors, negotiating scope, reviewing change orders, validating production quantities, and ensuring adherence to safety, specifications, and performance KPIs. - Risk & Issue Management
Experienced in identifying and mitigating risks related to terrain, weather, supply chains, permitting delays, and construction sequencing. - Stakeholder Communication
Clear and confident communicator able to collaborate with engineering teams, construction partners, clients, local authorities, and executive leadership. Skilled in producing dashboards and executive-ready reporting. - Financial & Contract Management
Proficient in budget development, cost tracking, forecasting, invoice approvals, and contract compliance.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead the planning and execution of long-haul fiber builds across Alberta and Western Canada
- Develop and maintain detailed Microsoft Project master schedules, including dependencies, resource plans, and critical path tracking
- Coordinate field construction activities including civil, aerial, fiber installation, splicing, and testing
- Collaborate with engineering teams to validate designs and ensure constructability
- Manage permitting, land access, and utility approvals with municipalities, provincial agencies, and third-party stakeholders
- Lead project meetings and deliver progress updates to clients and executive leadership
- Identify project risks and implement mitigation or recovery plans
- Track project costs, validate contractor production, manage change orders, and maintain financial accuracy
- Oversee testing and commissioning, ensuring proper documentation, as-built records, and turnover packages
Qualifications
- 7+ years of project management experience in telecommunications, fiber-optic networks, or utility infrastructure
- Demonstrated success leading long-haul or large-scale fiber projects in Alberta or Western Canada
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Project
- Strong knowledge of Alberta permitting, right-of-way processes, environmental constraints, and utility coordination
- PMP certification (or equivalent) is considered an asset
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites
